Everything you need to know about participating

Who can participate in Chaniathon?

Chaniathon is open to all undergraduate and graduate students currently enrolled in Greek universities. Students from any discipline are welcome, though backgrounds in engineering, computer science, or related fields are beneficial. Teams must consist of 3-5 members.

Do I need prior experience with electronics?

No prior experience is required! Chaniathon is designed to be accessible to students of all skill levels. We provide resources, tutorials, and mentorship to help teams succeed. What's most important is your enthusiasm, creativity, and willingness to learn.

What tools will we use for the virtual phase?

For Phase 1 (Virtual Prototyping), teams will use Wokwi, a browser-based simulator for Arduino, ESP32, and other microcontrollers. Wokwi allows you to build circuits and write code without any physical hardware. It's completely free to use and requires only a web browser.

What happens in the hardware phase?

The top-scoring teams from Phase 1 will advance to Phase 2 (Hardware Prototyping). These teams will receive electronics kits and access to HMU's laboratories to build physical versions of their projects. Mentors will be available to assist with hardware implementation and troubleshooting.

What resources will be provided?

All teams will have access to online documentation, tutorials, and mentorship. Advancing teams in Phase 2 will receive electronics kits containing components needed for their projects, as well as access to HMU's laboratories with tools and equipment. Basic components like resistors, LEDs, sensors, and microcontrollers will be provided.

How are teams judged?

Projects are evaluated on a 100-point scale across five categories: Functionality (30 points), Innovation (20 points), Complexity (15 points), Presentation (15 points), and Hardware Implementation (20 points). Judges are looking for working prototypes that solve real problems in creative ways with clean implementation and clear communication.

Can I participate if I can't attend in person?

Phase 1 (Virtual Prototyping) can be completed entirely online. However, Phase 2 (Hardware Prototyping) requires physical presence at HMU Chania to build and test your hardware. If you cannot attend in person, you can still participate in Phase 1 and gain valuable experience, but you won't be able to advance to the hardware phase.

How do I form a team?

You can form a team with classmates or friends, or use our team-matching system when you register. We encourage interdisciplinary teams with diverse skills (hardware, coding, design, documentation). Each team must have 3-5 members, and all members must register individually while indicating their team affiliation.
